Stefan Butlin, founder of Testpad

Founder of Testpad. Software developer based in London, UK.

Stefan has been writing software for 30 years, starting in embedded telecoms and moving up the stack through iPhone apps and now web development.

Testpad came out of a previous role where the QA team was stuck in a mess of spreadsheets. The tool they went looking for didn't exist, and everything close to it was heavier than the problem. So in 2010 he set about building it, and a year later in 2011, Testpad first opened its doors.

The idea hasn't changed since: a test is one line of plain text, not a record in a database. Plans read like checklists, with indented lines for structure, and tests run in columns alongside. 16 years on, Testpad is still independent and founder-run, used by thousands of teams in 70+ countries, who between them have recorded over 100 million test results.
